Senior Meetings | The College Application Process | FAFSA Updates

Reported by on 9/29/20

Seniors, it’s time to schedule your senior meeting with your school counselor. This year the guidance department is using Calendly to schedule individual virtual meetings with seniors to discuss the college application process and students’ specific post-secondary plans. Senior students received an initial email invite from their school counselor the week of September 14, 2020 and will receive a follow up email this week (the week of September 28). Many seniors have already taken advantage of meeting with their counselor. Students are responsible for selecting an appointment time that fits their schedule. Students should not register for a senior meeting during one of their academic class periods. Appointments are available immediately before/after school, during lunch, study halls, late arrival or early dismissal periods. Once students register for their senior meeting they will receive a confirmation email with a personalized Zoom link. For security purposes, the Calendly sign up link is only available to students through their school account.

Ahead of their Senior Meeting, students are encouraged to begin the college search process using SchooLinks. SchooLinks is a robust post-secondary planning platform that allows students to explore colleges, careers, scholarships and interest inventories. Students will build their college application lists in SchooLinks and even use the platform to request transcripts and letters of recommendation. When requesting letters of recommendation students should fill out the Profile section of SchooLinks or complete the Letter of Recommendation Profile (

As a part of the college application process, students should begin looking at sources of financial aid. Scholarship opportunities will be posted to SchooLinks throughout the year as Waubonsie becomes aware of opportunities. Seniors should also make a plan to complete the FAFSA this year. Starting with the Class of 2021, the State of Illinois has mandated that students complete the FAFSA, the Illinois Alternative Application or a FAFSA waiver as part of their high school graduation requirements. The FAFSA officially opens on October 1, 2020. On October 20, 2020, Waubonsie Valley will be partnering with the Illinois Student Assistance Commission to hold a virtual FAFSA completion workshop.

The Waubonsie Valley Guidance Department looks forward to working with students as they prepare for life beyond high school. The links below are additional resources to assist students with the college application process:
